There's a runner on third and they have their best hitter, Tree Williams, up to bat. I'm going to be ready. Coach just put me on third base. I am here to protect that bag and make sure no one leaves or arrives. I'm like a guard dog ready to pounce, block, run down, whatever it takes, to protect my base. I can hear the visitors cheering in the bleachers. Tree plants his feet firmly in the batter's box. The pitch is thrown. I hear a crack. A line drive headed straight toward me. I hold my glove up and it nails right into my palm, leaving it burning. My runner on third hesitates a few feet from the bag. Easy tag out. The home bleachers go nuts. Coach keeps his arms folded and nods his head. This is his way of going nuts. I've earned his approval. I proudly tuck in my Thunderbirds jersey on the walk back to my bag. I'm keeping it tucked. I have a reputation to uphold now.
