The hot desert heat is quenched by a tall orange cooler filled with ice and Gatorade courtesy of Ms. Gonzalez, the team mother. My turn to be on deck. I pull the size 32 bat from the fence and step into the 'on deck' circle. As I practice my swing, my jersey swooshes, letting in a bit of a breeze air. I feel good. Swinging that bat. “Batter up,” the umpire yells. I drop the weight off the end of my bat and trot toward home plate ready to pound some leather.
