We used to round up a lot of kids in the neighborhood and start a game of softball in the empty lot near the river. Sometimes the games would last for 17 innings, if nobody’s younger sibling came after them because it was time for dinner. In the summers, we’d be down there from sun up to sun down. If ever the ball went into the river, we’d flip a coin to see who went in after it. If you were lucky, it’d get caught in a stagnant pool between the rocks. After coming home soaking wet one day, Timmy Travers’ dad put up a backstop so that we’d stay out of the river.
