Jimmy Talvin’s grandpa decided to coach a team that year. It might have been peewee, but that gentleman was determined to check this off his bucket list. I say gentleman because he wore a plain suit and hat to every practice and every game. If you rode to practice with him, you had to be ready an hour ahead because he was a very slow driver. It gave you time to clear your mind. It took him a week to go through the catalog to pick out our jerseys. He kept saying they were ‘too busy’. Then he found them. He said it’s what they wore back in his day, only ‘made a little fancier’.
