It was an early Wednesday practice game and everyone seemed to still have standardized tests on the brain. All the people in the bleachers looked like bubbled in Scantron test forms. As I stood on the mound and looked toward home plate, ‘pentagon’, ‘pentagon’ kept repeating through my head. I threw the wildest pitch imaginable. And believe it or not, the offense batter sent it sailing back toward me. Like a robot, I raised my glove and it embedded right into the palm of it. I swear the umpire yelled “IIIII-sosceles!”
